How to Actually Improve Your Landings

Every pilot wants smoother landings, but many student and private pilots focus on the wrong things while trying to improve.

Good landings usually begin with a good approach.

If the airplane is:

• Too fast

• Too high

• Unstable

• Poorly trimmed

• Drifting off centerline

the landing will almost always become more difficult.

One of the biggest mistakes newer pilots make is carrying excess airspeed on final “for safety.” While this may feel more comfortable initially, extra speed often leads to floating far down the runway and inconsistent touchdowns.

Instead, focus on:

• Maintaining a stabilized approach

• Flying consistent airspeeds

• Looking toward the end of the runway during the flare

• Making small, smooth corrections

Another important lesson is understanding that every landing will not feel perfect.

Wind conditions, runway slope, turbulence, and density altitude all affect how an aircraft behaves near touchdown.
