Auburn Municipal Airport (KAUN) – Sierra Foothill Flying at Its Best

Arrival Notes

Flying into Auburn Municipal Airport is one of those approaches that reminds you why general aviation is so special.

Nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills, KAUN offers absolutely stunning scenery on arrival, with rolling terrain, ridgelines, and elevation changes surrounding the airport environment. The views coming in are incredible, but this is also an airport that demands attention and good planning.

Rising terrain in the area can become a factor quickly, especially for pilots unfamiliar with the foothills or during periods of higher density altitude. The airport sits at approximately 1,538 feet MSL and has a single runway, 7/25, measuring 3,700 x 75 feet.

One thing that really stood out during my visit was how variable the winds were. While standing on the ramp, I watched pilots depart in both directions depending on the conditions at the moment. It was a good reminder that winds in foothill terrain can shift quickly and may not always favor one predictable runway.

Airport Overview

KAUN is a non-towered airport serving the Auburn area and has become a popular stop for Northern California pilots thanks to its scenery, restaurants, and proximity to town.

The airport is well maintained and has a very active GA community feel. CTAF/UNICOM is 122.725.

Transient parking is easy to identify thanks to the blue “T” markings painted on the ramp, which is a nice touch that makes parking straightforward for visiting pilots.

FBO / Pilot Facilities

The pilot lounge at Auburn was clean, comfortable, and appeared to be very well kept. During my visit, a DPE was conducting a checkride inside, so I didn’t want to interrupt too much, but it definitely gave the airport an active training and aviation community atmosphere.

Overall, the facilities felt welcoming and pilot-friendly.

Food / Things Nearby

One of the best parts about KAUN is how much there is to do within walking distance of the airport.

There’s food available directly on the field, making it an easy stop for lunch or a quick break during a cross-country flight.

Even better, the well-known Moonraker Brewing Company is just a short walk away from the airport. It’s a hugely popular local spot and makes Auburn an excellent destination airport if you’re looking to combine flying with good food and a relaxed atmosphere.

Between the foothill scenery, local restaurants, and easy airport access, KAUN has a lot more destination appeal than many smaller GA airports.

Final Thoughts

Auburn Municipal Airport delivers the kind of flying experience that sticks with you.

The approach through the Sierra foothills is beautiful, the winds can keep things interesting, and the airport itself feels very connected to the local aviation community.

Add in good food, easy transient parking, and nearby spots like Moonraker Brewing Company, and KAUN becomes much more than just another fuel stop.

This is definitely one of those Northern California airports worth flying to just for the experience.
