Weed Airport (O46) – A Hidden Gem Beneath Mount Shasta

Arrival Notes

Flying into Weed Airport feels like stepping into one of Northern California’s best-kept aviation secrets. Nestled just northwest of the town of Weed and sitting in the shadow of Mount Shasta, the airport delivers some absolutely incredible scenery on arrival.

The field sits at roughly 2,943 feet MSL with a single 5,000 x 60-foot asphalt runway (14/32), which makes it very manageable even for smaller GA aircraft like my Cessna 150M.

Approaching the airport, the mountain dominates the skyline and makes for an unforgettable backdrop. On a clear day, the views alone make the flight worth it.

Airport Overview

Weed Airport is a public-use, non-towered airport operated by Siskiyou County. The airport has pilot-activated lighting, tiedown parking, self-serve and full-service fuel options, and a relaxed atmosphere that feels very welcoming to transient pilots.

Runway 14/32 is in good condition and currently supports both VFR and RNAV GPS operations into Runway 14. CTAF/UNICOM is 122.7.

One thing to keep in mind here is density altitude. Even though the runway length is generous, summer temperatures combined with the field elevation can definitely impact aircraft performance.

FBO / Fuel / Parking

The standout part of this visit was absolutely Váli Aviation LLC.

As soon as I arrived at the fuel pumps, Craig came out to greet me and check if I needed anything. That level of hospitality is becoming harder and harder to find in general aviation, and it immediately left a great impression.

He invited me inside the FBO to take a look around, and honestly, the facility is top notch. Comfortable pilot spaces, clean facilities, lounge areas, and a very professional setup overall. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to stay awhile instead of immediately hopping back in the airplane.

Váli Aviation is also known for having some of the cheapest fuel prices in Northern California, which makes Weed Airport an even better stop whether you’re just passing through or planning to spend some time in the area.

Fuel services currently include both 100LL and Jet A, with 24-hour fuel availability at their self-serve pump.

Things Nearby

The airport is only a short drive from the town of Weed and provides quick access to outdoor recreation, hiking, and some incredible scenery throughout the Siskiyou region. Of course, the real centerpiece is Mount Shasta, which is visible for much of the arrival and departure.

This would make a fantastic fuel stop for pilots traveling between Northern California and Oregon, but it’s also worth visiting as a destination airport all on its own.

Final Thoughts

Some airports are memorable because of the scenery. Others stand out because of the people.

Weed Airport managed to deliver both.

Between the incredible views of Mount Shasta, the relaxed atmosphere, and the outstanding experience with Váli Aviation LLC, this is easily one of those airports I’d gladly return to again.

If you’re flying through Northern California, O46 is absolutely worth adding to your list.
