Coalinga Airport (New Coalinga Municipal Airport) – Fly California Passport Stop

Arrival Notes

Coalinga was one of those stops that keeps you on your toes a bit. Winds were all over the place on arrival, with noticeable shifts on short final that required staying active on the controls the whole way in. Without a functioning AWOS, you’re relying on visual cues and whatever winds you can pick up from nearby indicators—so plan accordingly and expect the unexpected.

Pattern work here is straightforward, but the variable winds definitely make it more interesting than it looks on paper.

Airport Overview

Coalinga is a quiet, no-frills airport that fits right in with a lot of the lesser-traveled Central Valley stops in the Fly California Passport program.

One big update: fuel is now available again, which is a huge plus. They’ve set up a fuel trailer next to the old fuel farm, making it usable for transient pilots again. It’s not your typical self-serve pump setup, but it gets the job done and makes this a much more viable stop than before.

That said, AWOS is still inoperative, so don’t plan on getting automated weather here. Make sure you check surrounding airports or get a good weather briefing before heading in.

Facilities are minimal overall—this is more of a quick stop than a place to hang out—but that’s part of the charm if you’re working through the passport book.

Fly California Passport Stamp

Another solid stamp added to the book. Coalinga is one of those locations that feels a bit more “off the beaten path,” which makes it a fun and rewarding stop in the challenge.

If you’re chasing stamps, this one is worth knocking out—just go in prepared.

Final Thoughts

Coalinga isn’t a destination airport—but it doesn’t need to be.

Between the unpredictable winds, inop AWOS, and improvised fuel setup, it adds just enough challenge to keep things interesting. It’s a great example of why the Fly California Passport program is fun—you end up visiting places you’d probably never plan a trip to otherwise.

Definitely a worthwhile stop—just bring your A-game on the arrival.
