Experiencing a Comm Failure in the Traffic Pattern
As a pilot building hours in my Mooney M20E, every flight offers new lessons and challenges. Recently, I encountered a communication failure while in the traffic pattern. It was an unnerving experience that tested my training and preparation.
The Incident
During a routine flight, I was in the traffic pattern preparing to land when ATC was not acknowledging my radio calls. Initially, I thought it might be a simple frequency change issue, but soon I realized it was an intermittent transmitting issue. Maintaining composure, I was able to troubleshoot the issue and regain communication long enough to get a landing clearance. I landed safely and terminated the rest of the flight, reflecting on the importance of staying calm and just fly the plane.
Lessons Learned
1. Preparation is Key: Always have a backup plan for communication failures. Know your light gun signals and emergency procedures.
2. Stay Calm: Panic can lead to mistakes. Trust your training and stay composed.
3. Regular Equipment Checks: Ensure your communication systems are regularly inspected and maintained to prevent such occurrences.
Pros and Cons of Owning Your Own Aircraft
Pros:
1. Flexibility: Owning my Mooney M20E allows me to fly whenever I want, without the constraints of rental schedules.
2. Familiarity: Flying the same aircraft regularly builds familiarity, leading to better handling and confidence.
3. Building Hours: It’s more convenient to accumulate flight hours, crucial for my goal of joining the airlines.
Cons:
1. Cost: Ownership comes with significant expenses, including maintenance, storage, insurance, and fuel.
2. Responsibility: Managing an aircraft requires time and effort, from regular maintenance to ensuring compliance with regulations.
3. Unexpected Issues: Mechanical problems and comm failures can arise, necessitating immediate attention and potentially grounding the aircraft.
Conclusion
While owning my Mooney M20E has its challenges, the benefits of flexibility and familiarity make it worthwhile for my aviation journey. Each flight, especially those with unexpected issues like a comm failure, reinforces the importance of preparation, calmness, and continuous learning. These experiences are invaluable as I work towards my goal of becoming an airline pilot.
